With the release of the GI Joe Movie in August of 2009, several different GI Joe series have appeared. All released by IDW Publishing and a completely different continuity then the regular IDW series and the Marvel/DDP one.
Starting in March of 2009, IDW began releasing the 4 part movie prequel comic series monthly. These were written by Chuck Dixon. Each issue is an introduction of an individual character and their back story prior to the events of the movie.
Starting at the beginning of July 2009, the 4 issue official movie adaptation comic was released 1 issue per week leading up to the release of the movie on August 7th. The trade paperback was released at the same time. This series is written by Denton J. Tipton. A one shot full length comic that continues the story right after the adaptation comic was released free at the retail store Game Stop in conjunction with the release of the movie's EA video game. (Note: there are two different version of an EA free comic, one contains a preview of the GI Joe Helix Special with interviews of the game designer. See below for the one related to movie universe.) In October of 2009, a 4 part mini series which tells the story of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow's history with Arashikage Clan. This mini series is written by Ray Park, the actor who plays Snake Eyes in the movie, and Kevin VanHook. This is the continuity of the movie.
