Marvel Comics, 1982-1994

The Marvel series, which ran for 155 issues starting in 1982 until 1994, was created by Larry Hama. This series was the lifeblood of the G.I. Joe universe.

The Yearbooks Published from 1985 to 1988. They contain recaps of each years events and generally an original story. As well as other bonuses.

The Order of Battle 4 issue series published in 1987 which showcased both the vehicles and personnel of G.I. Joe and Cobra.

Special Missions ran for 28 issues from 1986 to 1989. The series focused on missions generally not associated with the main series.

G.I. Joe and the Transformers was a four part mini-series released in 1987 that teamed G.I. Joe with the Autobots and Cobra with the Decepticons.

The European Missions are the reprinted American versions of Action Force Monthly which appeared in the United Kingdom. 13 Issues published between 1988 & 1989.

The 13 issue G.I. Joe Comics Magazine reprinted the main series 2 to 3 issues at a time in digest format & released between 1986 & 1988.

Tales of G.I. Joe reprinted the first 15 issues of the main series on a glossier paper stock. They were released between 1988 & 1989

Marvel Comics released Trade Paperbacks reprinting the early Marvel G.I.Joe adventures, issues #1-50. These were released in 2002.

The Transformers: Generation 2 featured appearances from G.I.Joe in three of the issues in the series.

Blackthorne Publishing, 1987-1989

The Official How To Draw G.I. Joe was a three issue series released by Blackthorne Publishing in 1987 & 1988..

G.I. Joe in 3-D was a 3-D comic published by Blackthorne Publishing. 6 Issues plus an annual were released between 1987 & 1989.

GI Joe Extreme was released in 1995 by Dark Horse. The first four issues were a mini series. The actual series only ran for 4 issues. It takes place in the future using all new characters and with no connection to characters created by Larry Hama.

Image Comics, 2001-2003
Devil's Due Publishing, 2004-2008

GI Joe the Real American Hero Volume 2 continues the storyline but starting in 2001. Originally published through Image Comics then switching to Devil's Due Publishing. The series ended in 2005 after 43 issues.

A three issue Battle Files & 3 Issue Data Desk Handbook series showcased both the vehicles and personnel of G.I. Joe and Cobra.

The Convention Specials & Misc. Comics included various comics published by Image/Devil's Due.

Image Comics' second monthly series, Frontline, features rotating writers and artists telling stories set in different periods of Joe history. Series ran for 18 issues and ended in 2003.

G.I. Joe: Master & Apprentice was a four issue series released by Devil's Due in 2004. This series featured the origin of Kamakura.

G.I. Joe: Master & Apprentice 2 was a four issue series released by Devil's Due in 2005. This featured Storm Shadow's apprentice, Junko Akita.

G.I. Joe: America's Elite is a continuation series that takes place a year after the events of The Real American Hero series. Published by Devil's Due in 2005 and ran for 36 issues until 2008.

G.I.Joe: Special Missions is a series of 48 page specials spotlighting missions involving G.I.Joe personnel. Published by Devil's Due between 2006 & 2007.

Storm Shadow received his own series in 2007 written by Larry Hama & lasted 7 issues, which was published by Devil's Due..

Devil's Due Declassified, 2005-2007

Snake Eyes: Declassified is a six issue mini-series published in 2005 based on G.I.Joe's most popular character.

G.I. Joe: Declassified was a three issue bi-monthly series published in 2006 featuring Larry Hama's return to G.I.Joe comics.

Scarlett: Declassified is a one-shot published in 2006 and told the origin of Scarlett.

Dreadnoks: Declassified was a three issue bi-monthly series released in 2006 & 2007 featuring the origin of Zartan and his biker gang the Dreadnoks.

G.I. Joe vs the Transformers
2003,2004,2006,2007

G.I. Joe vs. Transformers was a six issue series released by Image Comics in 2003. This series takes place in its own continuity.

G.I. Joe vs. Transformers II was a four issue follow up to the previous story, set in the same continuity. This was published in 2004 by Devil's Due.

G.I. Joe vs. Transformers III The Art of War continued the saga in a five issue series published in 2006 by Devil's Due.

G.I. Joe vs. Transformers IV Black Horizon was a two issue series published in 2007 by Devil's Due, introducing Cobra-La and Unicron to the continuity.

Dreamwave Productions
Transformers G.I. Joe, 2003-2004

Transformers: G.I.Joe, from Dreamwave Productions, was a six issue series in a World War II setting. Published by Dreamwave starting in 2003.

Transformers/G.I.Joe - Divided Front brought the story into the early 80's. Only one issue was released in 2004 because Dreamwave lost the license to publish Transformers.

Devil's Due Other Continuities, 2004-2006

G.I. Joe: Reloaded brought the G.I.Joe story back to its beginnings in a new continuity. 14 Issues with two specials were first published in 2004 by Devil's Due.

G.I. Joe: Sigma 6 was a six issue limited series based on the Sigma 6 television show published from 2005 to 2006 by Devil's Due..

Hasbro Comics, 2004-Present

Hasbro produced full size comics that were included in various figure packs. Starting in 2004 19 3 figure packs were released. In 2008 several 2 figure packs were released some with original stories written by Larry Hama.

Hasbro's Mini Comics were inserted with cereal or figure packs.

Independent Publishers, 2008-Present

Fun Publications Comics produced the GI Joe vs Cobra series beginning in 2008. These were released with figures at the GI Joe Convention and later through comic book stores. And part of the original continuity.

In 2009, the Canadian GI Joe Convention produced a single comic with a very limited print run of 110 copies that were released exclusively with the Canadian GI Joe Convention figure set and only available at that convention.

Rising Sun Comics began releasing comics in 2009. These comics bridge the gap between the US GI Joe team and the UK Action Force team who have the common enemy of the Red Shadows. And are part of the original continuity. This is a fan created comic series sold privately.

The Action Force - The Complete Works Coloring Project is a 7 part series of trade paperback sized volumes which are colored versions of the black and white stories that appeared in the UK Battle Action Force series.

In January 2009, the main series, simply titled GI Joe, is written by Chuck Dixon. This is a totally new continuity.

In February 2009, IDW began releasing a Larry Hama written series titled GI Joe: Origins, the same continuity. This series covers how the Joe team was created.

A third series, following the same new continuity, started in March 2009 titled GI Joe: Cobra, this is a 4 part mini-series written by Christos Gage & Mike Costa. A Special and a sequel 4 part up series are planned.

IDW is releasing reprints of the original Marvel comics in Trade Paperback form. Titled Classic GI Joe. Additional reprinted Marvel issues with be released in a Best of Series.

This is the Movie Comic section. In March of 2009, A GI Joe: Rise of Cobra Movie Prequel 4 issue series written by Chuck Dixon was released. In July, the 4 issue Movie Adaptation Comic was released weekly written by Denton Tipton. A Prequel Snake Eyes series follows in the fall of 2009 written by Ray Park
