The Chameleon [Swamp Skier] was first released boxed in U.S. toy stores in 1984 and it included Zartan. The toy was also sold in 1985 and was discontinued in 1986.

This was the only version of the Chameleon ever released.

Zartan was released as part of the third series (1984) packaged with exclusively with the Chameleon [Swamp Skier]. He was also sold in 1985, then was discontinued domestically in 1986.

The entire Chameleon is extremely fragile if not properly cared for. The handlebars and tow cable are especially prone to loss or breakage. The skids that the Chameleon ride on are also prone to becoming loose. In addition, the green, color-changing plastic of the vehicle body is prone to sun damage and darkening to a dark shade of brown.

There are no known variations of the Chameleon [Swamp Skier] vehicle.
However, there are two versions of Zartan's filecard printed on the back of the vehicle's box. The first version references Zartan's schizophrenia and multiple personalities. After complaints that the filecard was misleading people into thinking schizophrenia and multiple personality disorder were one and the same, Hasbro changed the filecard and the second version does not mention either one.

In Europe in the early 1980's, Zartan and the Chameleon were released in Action Force packaging. In the early 1990's, they were re-released in G.I. Joe packaging.
